Overview

The Mechanical Design Engineer will discover, test and implement new innovative technologies into our market leading products. This individual will be a key member in Select Comfort’s strategic execution of product development, championing great design and problem solving skills in support of our vision of becoming the world’s most beloved brand by delivering an unparalleled sleep experience.

Responsibilities

This position is responsible for completing mechanical design engineering functions on new product development projects, with exposure to all stages of development from concept conception to commercialization.

  • Define new and existing mechanical engineering design requirements in accordance with corporate quality goals, design for manufacturing (DFM), product marketing, and customer expectations and requirements.
  • Identify and analyze alternative new product design criteria to achieve optimal solutions that satisfy cost, technical requirements and project schedules.
  • Develop test methodologies to ensure that new product designs are verified and validated before product launch.
  • Understand and autonomously execute change management to include product and regulatory documentation.
  • Conduct periodic design reviews to gather design inputs from cross-functional teams.
  • Partner with external vendors on the purchase, design, testing, and installation of new equipment & new products. 

Qualifications

  • BSME required, MSME considered a plus
  • Minimum of 4 years of experience in mechanical engineering field.
  • Six-Sigma experience considered a plus.
  • P.E. license considered a plus
  • Strong mechanical engineering aptitude.
  • Excellent problem solving skills, and practical application of strong mechanical design theory and analytical skills.
  • Self-motivated with a high level of initiative and a proactive approach along with time management.
  • Demonstrated success in few design, development, validation and launches of new products.
  • Ability to lead technical and cross-functional project teams from concept to market successfully.
  • Demonstrated ability to provide technical leadership in mechanical engineering design aspect of projects with moderate complexity and scope.
  • Proven ability to successfully perform within a cross-functional team environment. Collaborate on cross-functional projects, reaching beyond traditional engineering responsibilities, to assist others as necessary to achieve goals.
  • Ability to design / solve complex engineering problems.
  • Proficient with new product development tools like Failure Mode and Effect Analysis (FMEA), and Design Validation & Testing (DVT).
  • Proven proficiency in design and development of mechanical systems.
  • Strong CAD (Pro/ENGINEER preferred) skills are required. Experienced in Tolerance analysis and GD&T.
  • Strong presentation skills and ability to present complex ideas and content to diverse audiences.
  • Desire to work in a hands-on R&D lab environment, along with engineering technicians.
  • Project planning and management (MS Project preferred) and cost forecasting is plus.
  • Ability to plan, organize and prioritize.
  • Conscientious, team player who drives for results.
  • Superior organizational skills with ability to multi-task and balance complex and routine work activities.
  • Ability to multi-task and manage numerous projects simultaneously.
  • Excellent interpersonal and written communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Prepare written reports, proposals, and presentations.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs.; team lift of up to 100 lbs.
  • Light / moderate travel based on business needs
